Chrysler possibly cutting more production in North America

Chrysler said Tuesday it is reviewing plans for future production of the Jeep Liberty and Dodge Durango minivans and the Dodge Dart compact car in North America.

CEO Sergio Marchionne told reporters at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit that the review will be “carefully considered” to determine the company’s future strategy.

The automaker said the cuts in production could range from 10 to 15 percent. Chrysler said production might remain at the current level, but if it does go down, the reductions would not be on a month-to-month basis.

Chrysler is trying to persuade U.S. regulators to approve a plan to exit the 10-year-old, $50 billion U.S. government bailout that saved the company and its bankrupt Italian parent. The automaker said it hopes for approval of a plan by the end of the year.

U.S. government officials are holding up Chrysler’s request for a $1.5 billion federal loan guarantee to build a new sport utility vehicle and a mid-size pickup truck in a bid to open other routes for Chrysler.

The automaker has said it believes it could get the necessary government guarantees if it builds the vehicles overseas or out of the United States. But the government’s position is to help companies that are building in the U.S.

The outcome of the review is unknown. The automaker could decide to cut even more production, introduce a new version of the Jeep Grand Cherokee or Dodge Durango minivans and the Dodge Dart, or simply discontinue the vehicles.

“There is still a lot of emotion around this,” Marchionne said. “The uncertainty has a lot of people a little bit nervous… so we would like to settle that first before we even start to do some of the stuff that we’re going to do.”
