Every time I do a commit, the commit message gets padded with the suffix ” (“Branch”, “Commit”, “Checkout” and so on). I can’t figure out what causes this.
I’ve looked through all files, and I haven’t found the culprit. (I’m at my wit’s end)
Also, this line was added when creating the hook, by accident. I’ve tried commenting it out, and found that it’s still causing problems.

How about a simple algebraic approach?
Say that the set you have is $S$.
You want to write it as a disjoint union, $S = S_1 \cup S_2$ where $S_1$ and $S_2$ are disjoint. This can be done by writing out an expression, like $S =\{\alpha\} \cup \{\beta\} \cup \{\gamma\}\cup \{\delta\}$ where $\alpha$, $\beta$, $\gamma$ and $\delta$ are some elements from $S$.
