# Customizing Your Screen

If you have more than one monitor and use your computer primarily as a tool for image creation, you may find it useful to _customize_ the display so that you can view your images more efficiently and work more comfortably.

To start, select Edit→Preferences. In the resulting window, click the Advanced button (see Figure 6-11) to see an extensive list of options for altering the display of the Photoshop interface. It’s worth the effort to spend a little time opening this dialog box and customizing the display so that you can work more comfortably with your images.

When you’re finished tweaking the various settings in the Preferences dialog box, click OK. To see the settings you just made, choose Window→Preferences.

The tutorials below will show you how to get started with Adobe Photoshop Elements by experimenting with the digital tools. If you’re looking for a more complete guide, you should check out The Beginner’s Guide to Photoshop Elements.

1. Start from the Import window

When you start using Photoshop Elements, you’ll use the Import window.

2. The Import window

You access the Import window via File > Open. The steps below show how to import a JPG from your desktop computer.

1. Open the Import window by clicking File > Open.

2. In the Import window, choose the JPG file. Then click Next.

3. A message will indicate the progress of the import. If any of your photos fail to import successfully, look in the Error Log for more information.

4. To import multiple files, choose File > Add Files to Import. Click Next to select the second JPG file you want to import. Repeat steps 2 to 4 to import the remaining files.

Steps 3 and 4 have the following additional options.

Number of photos to import: You can import one photo per file (1), import a single photo (0), import all photos (All) or import all photos with duplicates (Exact Duplicates). If you choose All, Photoshop Elements automatically imports the first photo of each file you add to import. If you choose Exact Duplicates, you can import either the first or last photo. If you choose All, include the original and duplicate copies of your photos. If you select All, your photos could appear in folders in the Content panel as multiples. For more information, see Working with photos.

Import batches: You can import batches of photos from a single folder, multiple folders or the entire contents of a hard drive. For more information, see Working with photos.

Import preset: You can load a variety of preset settings and create custom presets. These preset settings provide a good starting point to import photos from online services such as Instagram, Facebook, Google+ and Flickr.

Image settings: You can choose to use image metadata from a JPG file or use the Automatic settings. If you use Auto, then you can select the location, path and name of the original JPG file, or you can supply your own file path and name. If you choose to use image metadata, your choices are:

Python – Deleting rows from dictionary

I’m using a dictionary called myDict to track my main list, myList. I’m attempting to delete certain rows from the dictionary. The rows I want to delete are stored in a list called newList, which I’ve created from some other list.
myDict = {‘username1’: [‘name1’, ‘name2’, ‘name3’, ‘name4’], ‘username2’: [‘name2’, ‘name3’, ‘name4’, ‘name5’]}
newList = [‘name1’, ‘name2’, ‘name3’, ‘name4’]

Given the example above, I can’t just remove the newList elements from the dictionary.
myDict = {‘username1’: [‘name1’, ‘name2’, ‘name3’, ‘name4’], ‘username2’: [‘name2’, ‘name3’, ‘name4’, ‘name5’]}

Is there a way to simply delete the list?

You can delete a key/value from a dict like so:
>>> myDict.pop(‘foo’)
>>> myDict
{‘bar’: [], ‘foo’: [‘bar’, ‘bar’, ‘bar’, ‘bar’]}

You Are Being Lied To By Good, Honest Lobbyists

On Tuesday, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report about regulations issued by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to help farmers comply with the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Waters of the United States rule. It sounds like a great idea. The problem is that it doesn’t.

The rule is intended to clarify what constitutes an “isolated water body” — i.e., an area of land that doesn’t normally have water flowing through it but that can have water flowing into or out of it as needed, such as when it rains. It doesn’t make much sense, but without it, we’d have to buy water rights for every pond, ditch, and drainage pipe that crosses our property. While it’s useful for anglers, it’s also a headache for farmers and environmentalists.

So the EPA set out to clarify the law, and the GAO study says it did an excellent job of it. The agency issued 10 proposed regulations in 2011, after
