This project is inspired by the song “Sleeping Machine” by Beyoncé, the way that the arpeggiator records what is played on the sequencer in the studio while the song is in progress. It is quite fun to listen to the arpeggiator recording what you’re playing on the keyboard.
Hypercyclic is the first big project that I have done that’s not associated with a band. It has evolved slowly over a couple years and I know that it needs some more work, but the end result is very satisfying.

Hypercyclic is a software instrument that generates midi chord sequences from a user-defined set of chord progressions.
A set of pre-defined chord progressions are used to produce a list of sequenced MIDI numbers that a user can then play to generate different chord variations, like arpeggios and harmonics.
There are two main mode that can be used with Hypercyclic – automatic chord generation and manual chord generation.
In automatic chord generation, the chords are automatically generated by Hypercyclic by playing the chord progression, once the modal analysis is complete. During this process, the step size and pitch change of the sequencer can be modulated over time by the LFOs to induce a randomness.
The chord sequences can be edited in two ways: by clicking on different chords and by editing the LFO waveforms, which in turn modulate the pitch change and step size of the sequencer.
An overview of the chord progressions is included in the context menu in the piano roll so that the user can easily see which chords are played in which order.
Hypercyclic allows the use of an external midi-sequencer, so that the user can feed chords to the instrument.
You can even use the chords in the main patterns and create a new pattern from the chords used in the main pattern.
