WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A primary endorsement from Donald Trump could help Republican Martha McSally hold off a strong challenger in her bid to become the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Arizona, a key battleground state in the Nov. 8 presidential election.

McSally, a retired Air Force colonel, has a slight lead in the polls against former state lawmaker Kelli Ward, who has the backing of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

Trump’s formal endorsement was announced late Friday after a meeting between the real estate mogul and the McSally campaign in Washington.

Trump tweeted, “Martha is a great Senator and a really lovely person. I like her very much. I have no doubt that she will be a great Senator and, if we can get her there, a really terrific Governor or even Vice President.”

Trump’s endorsement of McSally was a surprise, given that he has actively campaigned for Ward during the Republican primary.

Trump addressed a packed crowd of supporters in Phoenix for a campaign rally on Friday, urging them to vote for Ward, whom he described as the “hard-working tough guy.”

Ward, who has endorsed Romney for the presidency, has been outspending McSally on television advertising.

Voter turnout in Arizona is traditionally strong during presidential election years, with Republicans typically dominating the state. In the primary election, Ward received 37.5 percent of the vote, compared to McSally’s 25.1 percent, according to data from the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office.

The RealClearPolitics polling average shows McSally leading Ward by 4.5 percentage points, and a recent Marist College poll has the race in a dead

The study, published Wednesday in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases, is the first to measure the prevalence of TB in all states and to investigate the factors behind the prevalence rate.

“I think this will be a wake-up call for policy makers,” study author and infectious disease researcher Nicholas Feasey, of the University of Alabama, said in a statement.

The study found that the highest prevalence rates of tuberculosis were among African-Americans in South Carolina and Mississippi, with a rate of 4.9 and 4.6 percent, respectively. Prevalence rates were also high among people living with HIV, with rates ranging from 1.9 percent to 4.8 percent.

Researchers also found a rise in TB rates between 2012 and 2015. Feasey suspects that an uptick in the number of immigrants and refugees coming from places where TB is prevalent, as well as the rise of multidrug-resistant TB, may have caused this surge.

Tuberculosis is a disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It can be transmitted through airborne particles and inhaling lung fluid that contains the bacteria. Left untreated, the disease can be fatal.

“The ongoing crisis in some countries like the Philippines, China, and Cambodia is posing a challenge for public health systems, particularly in the areas with the highest rates,” wrote study authors Ian Gordon, of the University of Alabama, and Feasey in a statement.

“We’re already seeing the rise of multi-drug-resistant TB which is a growing problem,” Gordon said in a statement. “We cannot wait for another decade or two before we take action to prevent the development of the next generation of multi-drug resistant TB strains.”

The study authors recommend that global health officials scale up prevention and treatment programs to combat the spread of TB.

“This is one of the best studies published so far to demonstrate the level of TB
