Is there any disadvantage of using VS as a SQL Server 2005 Development Tools?

Is there any disadvantage of using VS as a SQL Server 2005 Development Tools?

Nope, I run Visual Studio + SQL Server Data Tools on all of my development boxes. It’s the only way to get the IntelliSense etc.

None. I use it all the time.

I used it for a few years, and then moved to the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. I haven’t touched it since then, and I couldn’t tell you why I moved to Express.

How do I convert user visible strings to types?

I’m wondering if there is a way to handle the following scenario:

Enter 1234

Convert 1234 to a type

I believe I could use string.Format() to get the effect, but I think there must be a better way.
I’m creating a small command line interpreter, and I want to allow my user to enter values that could later be used by my program’s methods. It isn’t always a string, sometimes I need to convert “1234” to a type that would later be used as an int, or “1234F” to a float.
I’m looking for a way to do this without having to write custom code for each of the conversion functions I’m writing for this program. The things I’ve searched for (such as Casting Strings to Enums) all return something quite different from what I need.

You’re in luck – in C# 2.0, there’s a whole world of decimal types to convert to and from. There are a number of similar built-in operations as well.
string s = “1234”;
decimal d = decimal.Parse(s);
Console.WriteLine(d); // 1234

And of course, the reverse:
decimal d = decimal.Parse(“1234”);
Console.WriteLine(d); // 1234
