Public space is a term that can refer to a wide range of physical spaces. It can be used as a shorthand for the new contested political territory which has been produced by technological society. It is a public space in which the public is co-constructed. It represents the public sphere as a site of power, contestation, and change.

Public Space

Public space refers to a variety of spaces outside of the home where the public is able to interact with one another. These spaces may include: streets, parks, squares, markets, and galleries. It is important to keep in mind that public space itself is “couched in the private social space of the family and residential surroundings”. It is common to consider the home, where family life is lived, and the immediate environs of the home as private and, therefore, excluded from the public sphere. However, other theorists argue for the inclusion of the home into the public sphere. For example, Ruth Levitas of the University of Illinois (Chicago-Urbana) argues that the home not only allows us to think about the public sphere, but it is part of it.

As urban societies have increased in size and density, more and more of our daily lives have occurred in public space. Place matters: we study and research in a public library; we sit in the café watching the people around us; we attend public meetings; we shop in a supermarket; we eat, or used to eat, at McDonalds; we have our coffee at Starbucks; we use public transportation; we go to the movies and attend concerts in concert halls or stadiums. As social activities have been increasingly moved to public space, and as public spaces have come to overlap with the home, public space has become more and more of a part of the home.

It is here, in the home, and in public space, that much of our daily life occurs. It can be the place where we meet and interact with others, be it on the street, in a café, or in a concert hall. For E.L. Shoul and Robert A. Kanter, home, especially the home dining room, is considered to be a public space in which the family interacts with the public sphere. Public and private domestic activities have also been increasingly performed in the home. This process has occurred partly because of the increased size and density of urbanized society.
